Dairy Genetics Consultancy

The core of our consultancy services is the measurement and management of individual farming systems, to inform specific advice and guidance to meet your business objectives.

Initial Meeting

The initial meeting (online or face-to-face) provides a comprehensive assessment of the herd’s genetics and sets the foundation for future breeding strategies. Key components of this meeting include:

  • A historical review of the genetic performance of the herd, analysing past data to understand trends and strengths.
  • Evaluation of the genetic potential of the next group of heifers that are approaching breeding age.
  • Comparison of herd genetic performance against UK national averages to benchmark progress and identify areas for improvement.
  • Assessment of herd genetic performance in relation to the requirements and expectations of the current milk contract.
  • A review of bull selection processes to ensure optimal genetic advancement.
  • Development of specific breeding objectives and a tailored breeding strategy to meet the farm’s goals.
  • A detailed heifer audit and formulation of a semen use strategy, ensuring efficient and effective breeding outcomes.

Independent technical advice

Boost herd performance and milk contract fit with an annual genetics plan – including a review of herd performance compared to genetic predictions, heifer audit and semen use strategy.

Follow-Up Contact

To maintain momentum and monitor progress, three follow-up meetings (online or phone) are scheduled throughout the year to coincide with the AHDB proof runs. These sessions will include:

  • Review of predicted versus actual milk yield by lactation, helping to track performance and refine predictions.
  • Analysis of genomic results to ensure breeding decisions are informed by the latest genetic information.
  • Provision of bull selection advice and a bespoke sire list, with checks for average inbreeding to maintain herd health and diversity.
