Jay is a veterinary consultant who joined Herd Health Consultancy in autumn 2024. He qualified as a veterinary surgeon from the Royal Veterinary College in 2013 and has been a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS) since then. His early career was spent as a first opinion farm vet in Somerset and later in Cheshire, where he developed a strong interest in cattle lameness.
Following his time in practice, Jay completed a PhD at the University of Liverpool, focusing on lameness in beef cattle. He went on to lecture at the university, combining his academic background with a passion for sharing knowledge and delivering training. After a period working internationally, Jay returned to the UK to take on a production veterinary role with a genetics company. There, he was responsible for the biosecurity and health of the bull stud, including disease monitoring, bull performance, licensing, auditing, and policy compliance.
Jay has been invited to speak at both national and international events, and he enjoys engaging with a wide range of stakeholders — from students and farmers to vets and industry professionals. In addition to his veterinary and academic work, Jay holds a BSc in Bioveterinary Science (2009), is a fully qualified Level 4 hoof trimmer and instructor, and serves as a RoMS instructor and CHCSB auditor. He also delivers the AHDB Healthy Feet Programme as a Mobility Mentor, supporting farmers in improving mobility on farm.
